Read the requirements first
Check the item’s level, job, sex restriction where present and equipment slot. A broad class family is not the whole requirement: an item can name a specific job or a Master or Hero progression stage.
A two-handed weapon and a one-handed weapon use equipment slots differently. Check whether your chosen weapon leaves room for a shield or another permitted offhand before planning the rest of your gear.
Separate base stats from enhancements
Base ATK or DEF is only part of the comparison. Also read upgrade level, awakening, rarity, piercing and any set effects. Two items with the same name can perform differently after enhancement.
Compare armor as a set
Green armor sets use helmet, suit, gauntlet and boot pieces. Match the set family and the appropriate character restrictions. Read the number of equipped pieces required for each set effect before replacing one part.

Move from vanilla to custom families

Spend enhancement materials deliberately
Read the guide for the exact enhancement system before using a material. Normal upgrading, piercing, awakening, rarity and ascension are separate operations. A protection item for one operation should not be assumed to protect another.
